Eligibility:

  • Grades 9-11 high school students

  • Committed to preserving community and culture

  • As Newcomer Narratives is a primarily new organization, we are looking for creative and inspiring individuals who are ready to scale their impact, and make an deep, positive change/set an example for coming years.

Officer Responsibilities:

  • Uphold the Mission

    • Demonstrate a strong understanding and commitment to Newcomer Narratives' mission of supporting new and migrating high school students, especially those dealing with mental health challenges.

  • Collaborate Actively

    • Work closely with other officers and volunteers to ensure cohesive planning, communication, and program delivery.

    • Attend regular meetings and contribute to decision-making processes.

  • Lead with Initiative

    • Take ownership of your role and proactively propose ideas, solve problems, and take action, especially in the absence of established systems.

  • Adapt and Build Infrastructure

    • Help lay the foundation for future teams by creating guidelines, templates, or toolkits relevant to your role.

    • Be flexible and ready to pivot based on feedback, challenges, or evolving organizational needs.

  • Maintain Accountability

    • Meet deadlines, follow through on commitments, and communicate transparently about progress or obstacles.

    • Document work and processes to support sustainability and smooth officer transitions.

  • Support Students Directly or Indirectly

    • Whether through programming, communications, media, or fundraising, always center student needs and voices in your work.

  • Represent the Organization

    • Serve as an ambassador of Newcomer Narratives in all public or professional settings, maintaining professionalism and empathy.

Responsibilities of Each Officer:

Communications -

Primary Role:
Ensure clear, compassionate, and effective communication between the organization and its stakeholders, including students, families, and school staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage communication strategies to promote Newcomer Narratives' mission and services.

  • Coordinate with school counselors and community leaders to identify and reach potential beneficiaries.

  • Draft newsletters, announcements, and internal communications.

  • Maintain a consistent tone that reflects the organization's empathetic and inclusive values.

  • Gather feedback from students and families to improve engagement and outreach strategies.

Development -

Primary Role:
Secure funding and build strategic partnerships to sustain and expand the organization's impact.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify and apply for grants, sponsorships, and donations from foundations, corporations, and individuals.

  • Develop fundraising campaigns and donor engagement strategies.

  • Build relationships with community partners, local businesses, and philanthropic networks.

  • Maintain records of funding sources, reports, and outcomes.

Programs -

Primary Role:
Design, implement, and evaluate support programs that directly serve newcomer students.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop onboarding and orientation programs tailored to students who are new to the school environment.

  • Organize peer mentoring, support groups, and resource workshops focusing on mental health, social integration, and academic success.

  • Monitor the effectiveness of programs through feedback and measurable outcomes.

  • Work closely with students to assess needs and adapt programming accordingly.

  • Train and support volunteers or peer mentors involved in the programs.

Media -

Primary Role:
Manage the organization’s digital presence to raise awareness and engage with the community.

Responsibilities:

  • Create and manage content for social media platforms, the website, and other digital channels.

  • Develop storytelling campaigns featuring student narratives (with consent) to highlight impact and foster empathy.

  • Produce graphics, videos, and digital assets to promote events and initiatives.

  • Track and analyze engagement metrics to optimize reach and impact.
